NATURAL LEATHER

This type of leather is generally referred to as vegetable-tanned leather. It is produced by slowly immersing hides (for one to two months) in a tanning solution extracted from plant barks and other sources, allowing the tannin to penetrate the leather. Although this process is very time-consuming and labor-intensive, it results in leather that is less prone to shrinkage, durable, long-lasting, and becomes more comfortable with use. It also offers an enjoyable aging process and is gentle on both people and the environment. Approximately 85% of items currently circulating in the leather industry are said to use chrome-tanned leather, which is finished quickly and at a lower cost using chemical agents. However, at LENY, we only use vegetable-tanned leather. Among these, we specifically use leather from Shonan Leather Industrial Co., Ltd., one of only three companies in Japan that perform pit tanning.

Shonan Leather

This is pit tanning, known as full tannin tanning, rather than the more common drum tanning among tannin tanning methods. While drum tanning can be completed in a short period, the leather fibers are inevitably damaged due to being agitated in the drum. Pit tanning, on the other hand, allows the tannins to penetrate deep into the fibers without stressing the leather, making it an essential leather for products that are highly durable and can be used for a long time.
